Chloroplast is a semiautonomous organelle through maternal inheritance. Chloroplast genetic engineering has been successfully used in some plant to generate transgenic plants with higher resistance to insect, disease, drought, herbicide and bioproducing of antibodies and vaccines. On the other hand, researchers can improve the ability of photosynthesis through chloroplast transformation. Because of the specific character of chloroplast, it can be a new way to crop breeding. This review discusses some aspect of progress in Chloroplast transformation engineering.
