When we hear the term "Alarm Management", the image comes to mind of a horn sounding, the operator rushing to the panel board to silence the alarm, acknowledging the condition and taking some kind of corrective action to return the process to normal. This concept of handling alarms defines the operator's role in a process system and can be described as Human Data Management. A time-and-motion study may seem the proper means to determine the amount of time the operator needs to scan and monitor an array of instruments. This is not the case. The reaction time for the human side of "Alarm Management" is a function of how the data is presented to the operator and the experience/memory factor of the operator. This paper will address Alarm Management from the concept of data presentation to the operator in a Distributed Digital Control System and the automatic control of the process - handling alarms without operator intervention - will be discussed.
