It is a fact that engineering has been transcendental since its very beginning, for itrnhas always been a major factor determining the lifestyle of mankind andrnsupporting his achievements. However, it has been until recently that toprnmanagement has included the engineering function as an essential part of thernfirm’s strategic management, likewise, the transcendental nature of engineeringrnbegins to be acknowledged.rnThis paper aims to examine the way in which the engineering function transcendsrnthe company in both space and time, as it is involved in the achievement ofrnsustained global competitiveness. Also, the authors depict the major elements ofrntranscendental engineering and their relationships, as well as the factors governingrnits successful implementation for optimal corporate benefits. In this context, arngood computational network appears as a necessary infrastructure, in order tornsupport a suitable and flexible allocation of the various engineering tasks amongrnthe existing facilities.rnTranscendental design and transcendental manufacturing are understood as twornprimordial components of transcendental engineering, therefore, an examination ofrnthem is also included in this work. A globalized and systemic view of the concept,rnorigin, purpose, evolution and trend of engineering is presented, as a requirementrnto update its understanding. The authors believe that the philosophy andrnmethodology of transcendental engineering are likely to promote and facilitate allrnengineering tasks and to link them properly with the pertinent activities of therncompany. Collaborative design and integration of goals are, for example, twornimportant activities that fully benefit from this approach.rnThis presentation shows the progress achieved in this research work until now, andrnthe authors expect to have some valuable feedback from the audience.
