Radiation-grafted membranes prepared using styrene (S) and divinyl benzene (DVB) can be used as solid polymer electrolytes in fuel cells and other electrochemical devices. The use of DVB as crosslinker has an important influence on the ex-situ properties of swelling, ionic resistivity, mechanical properties, surface energy, and oxidative stability. DVB also influences gas crossover, polarization performance and lifetime in the fuel cell application. In spite of this importance, the actual DVB content and its extent of reaction has not been well investigated. Quantification of these properties for purposes of their correlation with preparative parameters or final membrane properties is examined in the work.
