The LHM provides reliable spatially distributed soilrnmoisture simulations forming the basis for upscaling pointscalernin-situ measurements towards the satellite footprint.rn The SMOS soil moisture product exhibits a rather noisyrnbehavior. Further analyses ruled out Radio FrequencyrnInterference (RFI) as cause and suggest that the largernfl uctuations in the retrieved soil moisture are associatedrnwith the multi-angular sensor design in combinationrnwith spatial heterogeneity in the observed land surfacernconditions (e.g. land cover, antecedent rainfall).
