The convergence of advanced computing technologies and innovative algorithm designs has made it possible to image complex subsurface structures using full 3D wave equation pre-stack depth migration (PSDM) methods. The uplift provided by wave equation migration helps explorationists re-interpret, re-evaluate and gain greater confidence in geological mapping of potential hydrocarbon structures. We describe a pseudo-spectral implementation of a shot profile wave-equation depth migration method and present several examples which graphically illustrate the benefits of wave equation migration over more traditional Kirch-hoff-based techniques.
