Activated coke/carbon (AC) has been proven effective in SO_2 removal from flue gas of stationary sources. Davini [1,2] showed that there are two types of SO_2 adsorbed on the carbon surface, weakly bonded (physically adsorbed) one, and strongly bonded (chemically adsorbed) one. The strongly bonded one is believed to be in the form of H_2SO_4 formed from oxidation of physically adsorbed SO_2 in the presence of O_2 and then reaction with H_2O [3, 4]. The presence of V_2O_5 on AC was found important to enhance SO_2 adsorption [5, 6] due to its oxidation activities. Some researchers, however, believed that the promoting effect of V_2O_5 on SO_2 adsorption is due to the presence of basic groups introduced by V_2O_5 [7]. Clearly, these results are not consistent. This work aims to illustrate the role of V_2O_5 on adsorption and oxidation of SO_2 over an AC and an AC supported, with 1% V_2O_5, with the aid of isothermal adsorption of SO_2, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and FT-IR analysis.
