Coal gasification mainly involves two steps: initial rapid devolatilization of coal to produce char, tar and gases and subsequent gasification of the char generated. As a slower step, char gasification usually controls the whole conversion process [1]. Although the first step is usually completed in a flash time, char structure varies with pyrolysis conditions, leading to difference in gasification reactivity. Thus, investigation on char structure is the foundation of understanding coal gasification reactivity. Many experiments [2-6] have been carried out to investigate physical structure of chars. However, little attention has been given to chemical structure of chars. In the present study, we examined the effect of charring temperature (CT) on data of proximate and ultimate analyses of chars formed by rapid heating of Shenfu coal and investigated relationships between CT and yields between CT and compositions of carbon disulfide (CS2)-extractable fractions (CDEFs) from the chars.
