Direct coal liquefaction (DCL) converts coal into gas, liquid and solid (or residue) products. To facilitate flow and discharge of the residue in DCL system, the residue always contains certain amounts of heavy liquid. The total amount of the residue usually accounts for about 30% of the feed [1, 2]. Using of this large amount of DCL residue has been a very important task crucial to the overall economy of DCL. However, not very many studies have been made on processing of DCL residue. For effective use of the residue, it is important to understand its components and their activity during various types of processing conditions [3, 4]. This presentation reports resent results on hydrogenation of a DCL residue obtained from a small scale continuous process. Hydrogenation results of its fractions are also included.
