Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is drawing more and more attention in the chemical industry due to its unique physical and chemical properties: first, its versatility as reagent and solvent; second, its non-toxicity for human health and environment [1]. DMC has been used as an attractive eco-friendly alternative to methylhalide (CH_3X), dimethyl sulfate (DMS) and phosgene for methylation and carbonylation processes [2]. The transesterifecation reactions between DMC and phenol or aliphatic hydroxy compound to produce diphenyl carbonate (DPC) or higher mass dialkyl carbonates are promising processes for many applications. Phosgene, a very active reagent, can react with many reagents without catalysts. While the transesterification of DMC and hydroxyl compound occurs only when a suitable catalyst is used because DMC is much stabler than phosgene.
