Defence Research Establishment Atlantic has been using the finite element code MAVART to design underwater piezoelectric transducers since 1976. This paper will review the development of MAVART3D, which provides a means for modelling 2D axisymmetric, 2D planar and fully 3D piezoelectric devices. MAVART3D solves the coupled interaction between a piezoelectric motor or sensor and attached structural components immersed in an infinite acoustic medium. A Mathematica hosted modeller which permits symbolic parametric modelling for MAVART3D will also be described. Examples will be presented that illustrate a range of applications.
