In this paper, a robust computational framework is proposedrnfor the modelling and analysis of vascular geometriesrnfrom biomedical images. The approach consists of thernsegmentation of vascular geometries using an active contourrnmodel and the extraction of geometric features. Arnrobust image feature is derived based on geometric interactionsrnbetween the active contour model and the imagernobject boundaries. The derived image feature uses voxelrninteractions across the image domain, and gives a coherentrnrepresentation of the vessel shapes in the image. The activerncontour model is therefore more robust to image noise andrnweak object edges. The regional shapes of the vessel structuresrnare characterized using surface curvatures computedrnanalytically based on a surface patch approximation technique.rnIn particular, the curvature measures are derived andrnused in the morphological analysis of the vessel geometries.rnThe experiments show that the computational modellingrntechnique can be used for the robust segmentationrnand shape analysis of vessel structures in the images.
