Total-recoverable (14 M HNO<,3>), "exchangeable pool" (1M NH<,4>NO<,3>) and water-extractable concentrations of 28 elements were studied in a 10 profiles transect (N-S) in Norway using HR-ICP-MS. On the basis of ratios among the HNO<,3> extractable fraction, water extractable fraction and NH<,4>NO <,3>-extractable fraction in the various horizons some general trends were elucidated. Factor analysis (PCA) on 28 elements in all fractions and all profiles separated into three main distinctive groups both in waterextractable and tota-recoverable fractions: the first one is related to long range transport of pollutants (V, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, Sb, Bi, Mo, Tl) the second one gathers together major soil cations (Ca, Mg, K, Al, Mn and Rb) and the third one is characterized by the lanthanoides.
