Significant research efforts are underway to develop third generation advanced high-strength sheet (AHSS) steels with numerous proposed processing routes aimed at creating microstructures containing retained austenite in a high strength matrix such as martensite, bainite or ultrafine grained ferrite. This paper reviews the different proposed third generation AHSS processing routes with emphasis on retained austenite characteristics and discusses the potential implications for mechanical properties. Correlations between tensile properties and austenite fraction are missing in some cases and the contribution of retained austenite in these high strength matrices to tensile properties may not be fully understood.
