This paper reports on the existing approaches, needs and priority issues related to the control theory and models and their applications to environmental risk assessments, as discussed in Working Group 1 during the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Air, Water and Soil Quality Modelling for Risk and Impact Assessment. These include the methods of forward and inverse modelling, methods using adjoint equations, perturbation theory, and variational methods. Their applicability, advantages and shortcomings are underlined.
