An analytical model was used to calculate the stress and strain in the adhesive layer of a peel joint. A measure of the stress concentration in the adhesive at the root of the peeling adherend was defined as an independent parameter; the "loading zone length", LZL. Peel data for two structural epoxy adhesives were used to investigate the criteria. Both the energy and strain based failure criteria, G_c(LZL) and ε_c(LZL), can be used to predict the steady state peel load with an average absolute error of less than 10% over the range of conditions that were examined.
