This paper describes an example of practical commercialisation.rnAustralia is a small country a long way from the major centres. Attempting to be atrnthe leading edge of a new technology that is evolving rapidly might seem eitherrndoomed to failure or at best a long shot to succeed.rnWe work in a "Cooperative Research Centre" (CRC), one of approximately 70 suchrnentities established in Australia. CRCs bring together researchers, governmentrndepartments and agencies (both federal and state), and businesses and are partlyrnfunded by Federal government money.rnA winning bid needs a convincing business plan, and it is clear that sponsoringrngovernments, as well as the business partners, are looking for commercial outcomes.rnThe word "Cooperative" is no empty slogan.rnWe shall illustrate how the CRC for microTechnology develops microdevices for arnrange of outcomes and how the CRC is assisting the Australian Olympic cause.rnCRCs are a great model by which to bring the best research resources from across arnnation, encompassing multidisciplinary capabilities, together with leading users andrnindustries, focused to deliver outcomes with identified pathways to adoption.
