Commercialization strategies: best practice versus next practice

When new technologies enter commercial use, there are many possible development paths.rnTwo extreme paths can be recognized. Firstly, there is the use of the technology to enablerninnovation in well established technology-product platforms within an existing industrial basern(the virtuous technology cycle). Secondly, there is the use of the technology to create productrnplatforms where an industrial base is absent, or where the new technology-product platformrnwill challenge the existing industrial base (the disruptive technology cycle). An optimizedrntechnology transfer strategy that is used between a public R&D environment and its industrialrnpartners will differ considerably in these situations. In building a strategy forrncommercialization of miniaturization technologies, one should take into account the virtuousrnor disruptive nature of the innovation one is dealing with.
