As we look into the future, by overlaying quantitative radiometric data of this sort with other biological information describing transcriptional and proteomic changes, researchers will be well positioned to carry out in-depth analyses of basic plant functions from the genomic scale to the whole-plant scale, and begin to build the necessary framework for generating predictive models that define them. These models ultimately can be used to make rational decisions in engineering plant traits for sustainable growth in a changing climate. This research was supported by the Department of Energy, Office of Environmental and Biological Research.
