Developing a process model for the design of assistance components in information appliances

Designing assistive components for information appliances is a rather new field in usability engineering, which requires the application of several psychological and ergonomic methods. We outline a process model, that supports the developer in two phases of the design process: 1. abstracting the users need for assistance from the concrete characteristics of task, user and context during the requirements analysis. 2. Selecting and applying the adequate evaluation methods for the evaluation of prototypes of assistance systems. The process model will be based on an expert system with an open database containing theoretical and empirical knowledge about the ergonomic design of assistance systems.
