In this paper, a pretest study using results of preliminary finite element normal modes analysis to help define the modal test acquisition point and excitation locations is presented. It is a two step procedure which in the first step localizes the measurement points by the normalized modal displacement. In the second step the Modal Assurance Criterion between finite element normal modes and simulated experimental testing modes was compared to a given number of exciter locations. The technique is demonstrated using a modal testing of a crankshaft of the V12 diesel The result shown that the pretest FEA are very useful in the modal test setup.
