In the Internet-based Remote Data Acquisition System (RDAS), the data protection is an important aspect. The protection includes the integrality, reliability, and security of data in processes of network transmission and storage. A kind of convenient and inexpensive Linux-based NAD (Network-Attached Device) is applied in the remote test system to store the data acquired by the field measure equipments. The NAD is composed of popular PC hardware and optimized Linux Operation System. In the storage device, the RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disk) technology and S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) for ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) disks are used to ensure the availability of data. In this paper, the software RAID-5 is created and the data I/O (Input/Output) performance is evaluated. An optimized combination of data chunk sizes is achieved. In order to predict the failures of disk drives, S.M.A.R.T. is implemented in this NAD. The statistical rank sum test method is applied to improve the failure prediction accuracy.
