An Analysis of Household Dishwasher Usage and Satisfaction

Consumers from two population samples, a national sample (n=630, telephone survey) and a local sample (n=77, personal interview), were asked questions concerning their access to a dishwasher, usage patterns, and degree of satisfaction with cleaning. The national survey was a random sample and the local interview was a convenience sample. Both samples consisted of home renters and owners. Data from the national sample that provided more general population information indicated that 64.1% of the respondents, and 72.1% of the homeowners who responded, had a dishwasher. Dishwashers were most often found in households with a higher income and larger size, between the ages of 30 and 60, and consisting of adult couples or families who entertain more frequently. Forty percent of the consumers used their dishwasher five or more times per week, and slightly under half rinsed their dishes before placing them into the dishwasher. Over 92 percent of the consumers were satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the performance of their dishwasher.
