Durability Study of Skid Resistance of Road Paving Stones

This paper describes a project conducted to study the skid resistance properties of major road paving stones in Singapore. Of special interest was the durability of the skid resistance of paving stones against traffic actions. The study consisted of laboratory treatment to simulate two forms of wear and tear caused by traffic actions: a polishing action and an abrasion action. Three different types of paving stones, which are in use in Singapore, were tested. The rate of change of skid resistance with the treatment was monitored and studied for each type of paving stones. Different responses to the two types of treatment were observed and compared with measurements in the field. The test results were found to be in good agreement with field performance and were able to explain the different behavior of paving stones under traffic action.
