Experiments at High Temperatures

A review is given of methods used in high temperature research, with particular reference to the temperature range above some 1500degC. Certain basic techniques are emphasised, i.e., furnace design, vacuum technique and temperature measurement, Next follows more specialized methods, in particular with the use of thermogravimetry. Various ways to determine equilibrium gas pressures in heterogeneus systems are shown, with examples from the reactions between carbon and the oxides silica and alumina. The paper concludes with a note on the kinetics in the same systems.
