The recovery of suspended matte particles from copper smelting slag was investigated on a laboratory scale. For this prupose, slag samples were contained in a fire clay crucible and heated above 1523K under a stream of nitrogen. A reducing agent, either charcoal, iron, or ferro-silicon, was added to the slag and its effect on reducing the magnetite content was examined. Most of the suspended matte particles settled within 30 min. if the magnetite content of the slag was lower than about 30 mass
