The reduction of FeO from iron saturated FeO-CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 slags by grphite, coke and coal char has been investigated at 1400-1600 degC. The reaction rate was measured by on-line gas analysis, and by electron probe microanalysis of the partially racted slag sample after removal from the furnace. "in situ" observation of the reactions within the sample at temperature was made possible using a transmission X-ray techniques. The structure of the slag/carbon itnerface was also characterised by optical metallography. Significant differences in the mechanisms and kinetics of the reaction were found between graphite and the various chars tested. These findings indicate that the OC_2 reactivity test currently used to characterise carbons may not be appropriate for all metallurgical applications.
