A method of localization for stationary nodes in wireless sensor networks is considered in this work.rnThis decentralized technique does not utilize inter-node range or angle of arrival estimates, but relies solelyrnon coordinate-related information in received packets from in-range neighbors. In contrast to coordinaternbeacon-based approaches, nodes with imperfect coordinate estimates also propagate their coordinaterninformation. In addition, transmitting nodes also provide two scalar measures of estimation accuracy, anrnerror radius and a containment probability. Receiving nodes estimate their position based on the vectorrnof received coordinates, the associated error radii and the containment probabilities. A performancernmetric for coordinate estimation is proposed, for which the coordinate centroid is optimum as all errorrnradii vanish. An estimator is then proposed which outperforms the coordinate centroid, especially whenrnthe arrangement of transmitting nodes around a receiving node is not symmetric. Methods to computernthe error radius and the containment probability are also addressed.
