In this paper, we introduce a tutorial, asynchronousrniterative decoder and use Lyapunov functions to investigate itsrndynamics and convergence. As our aim is to expose fundamentalrndynamics of iterative decoding that are independent of specificrnnoise distributions and coding structures, the decoder is simplifiedrnand idealized to ensure that it makes few assumptions concerningrnthe channels and codes to which it is applied. Viewing therndecoder as a dynamic system, we show that, while it may exhibitrncomplicated behaviors, its convergence in the neighborhood ofrnevery codeword is guaranteed.
