This paper presents a unified approach to determine thernprobability of bit error (BER) of various unitary transmit diversityrnschemes under a variety of conditions. Using well known results forrnthe quadratic form of a complex Gaussian random vector, we showrnhow to compute the exact BER of space-time block codes (STBC) fromrnorthogonal designs under the following scenarios: imperfect channel estimation,rnspatial correlation between transmit antennas, varying degreesrnof temporal correlation, different modulation schemes, different antennarnconfigurations and different code rates. We present an extensive set ofrnsimulations to illustrate the application of the unified approach to arnvariety of scenarios, including the exact performance of linear decodingrnof a 2 transmit, 2 receive antenna system using an orthogonal QPSKrnSTBC, under imperfect channel estimation and spatial correlation. Wernalso propose and analyze a new detector for STBC in fluctuating channelsrnwith varying degrees of correlation.
