We investigate the transceiver design problem for arnmultiple input multiple output (MIMO) link considering the effectrnof channel estimation. We work with the total mean squaredrnerror as the performance measure and develop transceiver structuresrnconsidering the effect of maximum likelihood (ML) channelrnestimation. The proposed transceiver structures are optimum inrnthe sense of minimizing the total MSE and distributing the MSErnequally among the parallel data streams. Next, an upper boundrnfor the number of data streams that can be transmitted forrna given target MSE is derived. Motivated by the substantialrneffect the channel estimation process can have on the systemrnperformance, we next investigate the problem of how the MIMOrnlink should distribute its total available power between powerrnexpended for channel estimation versus data transmission. Thernoptimum power allocation between the training sequences forrnML estimation of the channel and data transmission is derivedrngiven the total power budget. Numerical results supporting thernanalysis and the power allocation schemes are presented.
