Demystifying Non-Prescription Computer Spectacles

Non-prescription computer spectacles are often self-prescribed by workers as a solution to workstation discomfort. These products reduce discomfort by the use of tints, anti-reflection coatings and refractive power (for example magnification spectacles and prism spectacles). This paper examines the scientific basis behind the use of tints, coatings and refractive power in eyewear. However, since visual discomfort may be indicative of visual anomalies, poor workstation design and poor work practices, non-prescription computer spectacles may not provide the solution to discomfort required by the wearer. As ergonomists, if we understand how these products work, we are in a better position to advise workers and implement workplace measures. This paper suggests alternative strategies to help ergonomists manage visual discomfort in the workplace.
