To obtain good form accuracy in diamond machining of mirrors of various profiles on CNC Diamond Turning Machines, it is essential to locate the tool precisely in the vertical (Y) and horizontal (X) directions. This paper analyses and discusses the effects of Tool offset in the X-axis and the variation between the 'assumed tool radius' and the 'actual tool radius' on the resulting profile errors. A computer program to obtain the numerical values of the correction to be effected has also been developed. The validity of the new method has been verified by conducting actual trials. This new approach ensures fast and precise positioning of the tool.
