The process for DRI/HBI production with natural gas self-reforming in the metallization zone of a shaft furnace is developed. This process utilizes counter-current flow for preheating, prereduction and cooling zones and cocurrent flow for metallization zone. The products of natural gas partial combustion are used as a process gas for reduction and preheating stages, and recycled hydrogen and natural gas mixture is used as a process gas for the metallization stage. Cycled process gas is also used as a coolant. The optimal design and operational parameters of the furnace have been determined based on a mathematical model of the process. The large scale industrial plant tests have proved the possibility of DRI/HBI production with metallization level and carbon content up to 92-95
