GREEN CITIES IN HUNGARY

In Hungary, 236 cities were registered at January 1, 2001, which involve 65.7% of the country's population. Environmental quality in cities - along with housing, traffic conditions, air quality, public green area per capita, etc. - is important to the quality of life. The aim of the study was to rank and classify Hungarian cities according to their environmental quality and level of environmental awareness. To answer this task, the ,,Green Cities Index" was calculated that ranks cities on many different environmental criteria (Cutter, S.L., 1992; Kerenyi, A., 1995). The data basis of the study comes from the Statistical Year-Books of the Hungarian counties (2000) (including data for the year 2000), Statistical Year-Book of Budapest (2000) and the preliminary results of the overall census made in January 2000 (Census, 2001. 1. Preliminary Data. Central Statistical Office, Budapest) as well as air quality data measured and collected by the National Public Health Institute both for the non-heating half-year (April 1, 2000 -September 30, 2000) and the heating half-year (October 1, 2000 - March 31, 2001) in each city (Vaskoevi, B., 2001).
