THE ENERGY BALANCE EXPERIMENT EBEX-2000

The closure of the energy balance of the earth surface requires careful measurements of all fluxes and storage terms. The following topics are of special significance: 1. Turbulent fluxes should be carefully corrected, especially the spectral correction. The fast response moisture sensors need an in-situ control of the calibration (probably not the LiCor 7500). 2. The exact measurement of the net radiation is impossible with low cost net radiometers and the long wave components especially need careful individual corrections. 3. The soil heat flux and the soil heat storage have a large influence on the residuum. 4. Even for obviously homogeneous terrain horizontal flux divergences are possible. It is possible to close the energy balance for running mean values up to 20-50 Wm~(-2). Because the heat storage in the soil has an important influence on the residuum, the methods and models to determine this storage may be a key to closing the energy balance.
