Understanding how micrometeorological factors influence CO_2 exchange between the soil and atmosphere is important in determining sources and sinks for carbon in terrestrial ecosystems. Carbon dioxide flux from soil is affected by belowground production and gas diffusivity through pore space. Measurements of CO_2 concentrations in soil pore air (x_c) were made in a temperate forest with shallow soil to better understand the belowground production and gas diffusion process on a daily, weekly, and seasonal basis as well as spatial variations across a drainage gradient.
