With the aim to look for a way to effectively sterilize carbon beds with a minimal start up and rinse down time, and no change to the nature of the carbon, a pilot study have been carried out using different chemicals. In this study, two type of chemicals are used to sterilize carbon. They are chlorine solution and NaOH. In this study, the bacteria count is monitored before and after the chemicals treatments. The result indicated that caustic is a much better chemical to sterilize the carbon without changing the nature of the carbon. Most of the bacteria did not survive when the carbon tank is maintained at pH 10-11 for 2 hours, and all bacteria did not survive when the pH is maintained at 12 for 2 hours.
