One of the important aspects of Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA)rnanalysis is the estimated removal of pathogens through treatment. QMRA analysis often lacksrnsite-specific performance data and typically relies on pathogen log-removal estimates fromrnsimilar treatment configurations. In this study, aerobic spores were used as pathogen/particlernsurrogates to measure the physical removal performance of conventional and biologically activerngranular media filters at three drinking water purification plants. This performance data wasrnsubsequently utilized in a QMRA model to provide individualized risk estimates for theserntreatment facilities that takes into consideration seasonal variability as well as the potential forrn“upset” or challenging operating conditions.
