A new method for modelling plastic flow, based on the distribution of dislocations (viewed as strain nuclei rather than crystalline defects) is described. The method is directly related to modelling cracks by a similar procedure, and the similarity of the approaches lends itself well to the study of interaction between plastic flow fields and stress raising features. It is also numerically efficient, as the plasticity solution is applied only as a perturbation on an elasticity solution. Lastly, it is entirely feasible to extend the method to model voids, pores, or other features signalling the imminent exhaustion of ductility.
