A new multiproperty test system is described for obtaining physical and mechanical data in tests at high homologous temperatures on refractory materials. The new test system involves the use of a miniature electrothermomechanical test rig in which direct current is used to heat the testpiece. Mechanical data are presented as stress versus true strain curves where strain has been measured using an innovative method based on the variation in resistance that is caused by geometrical changes during deformation. Thermal data such as expansion, conductivity and resistivity are obtained using a variety of methods that allow for a variation in temperature along the testpiece.
