The compactness and bilayer structure of passive film with outer Fe-richen oxides and innerCr-richen oxides is critical for the surface quality during fabrication and transportation of stainlesssteel (SS) facilities because of its barrier properties in corrosion environment. Characterizationand evaluation on the quality of passive film on SS is one of important procedures for high-qualitysurface fabrication. An attempt has been made in this paper to elucidate a novel, inexpensive, andrapid method based on chromaticity measurement, to discern passive films formed on type 304 SSby air exposure and chemical passivation, and to understand the relationship between chromaticitymeasurement and electrochemical behavior.
