The fluid dynamics of fires is an extremely important topic in loss prevention, safety engineering and fire protection engineering. Availability of fuel, ignition, fire growth, fire spreading rates, amount and temperature of the smoke layer produced, structural impairment, evolution of toxic gases, and the amount of time available from the onset of fire for the safe departure of occupants are all topics of immense concern. Information, analysis and calculations of fire dynamic phenomena can assist in understanding and applying scientific information to real-world fire situations. That is the focus of the paper. Recent extensive study, research, experimentation and field observations and measurements have led to dramatic improvements. Some particularly important issues related to fluid dynamic aspects of fires are considered, with sample modeling given, including fire ignition, fire growth, fire spread, fire ferocity, and prospects for flashover and fully involved fires.
