The combustion characteristics of spray flames of canola methyl ester (CME) and its blends with Jet A fuel were studied in a furnace with re-radiating walls. The blends contained biofuel volume concentrations of 25%, 50% and 75%, denoted as B25, B50 and B75 respectively. The combustion chamber was lined with refractory brick that was preheated to 725 K. A 300 micron air-blast atomizing nozzle was used to produce a liquid fuel spray. The fuel flow rates were adjusted to produce a constant heat release rate of about 7.33 kW at atmospheric pressure. The radial flame temperature profiles, radial in-flame species concentration profiles, global emissions, flame radiation and soot volume fraction were measured. The global CO emission index was lower for the biofuel flames compared to the diesel spray flame due to the presence of the fuel-bound oxygen. The global NO emission index was comparable for all spray flames and was consistent with the in-flame NO concentration measurements. The radiative heat release fraction and soot volume fraction were comparable for all the spray flames.
