The generalized interpolation material point method (GM') is an extension and evolution from the material point method (MPM). Compared to MPM, the GM' method is able to eliminate the noise arisen from the cell crossing and numerical instability, and to improve the accuracy of the simulation involving the strong discontinuity, lager deformation in solid mechanics. In this paper, the GM' in which particle size is tracked for keeping material contiguous in each time step is adopted for solving the 1D and 2D gas dynamics problems. The simulation results show that the GIMP can be applied to the 1D and 2D gas dynamics simulation, and the GIMP is more suitable to simulate the gas dynamics problems including strong discontinuity, shock wave and lager deformation compared with the conventional MPM method.
